Protein Mobility

Measurements of protein electrophoretic mobility (zeta potential) are becoming more widespread in protein and biopharmaceutical research. It is now becoming recognized that as well as being associated with the charge on the molecule, electrophoretic mobility also relates to the stability and the behavior of the protein in solution.

The charge on a protein is one of the fundamental parameters that affects aspects of protein behavior such as:

  • Activity
  • Aggregation
  • Interaction with membranes and other surfaces
  • Ligand binding affinity
  • Filtration
  • Long term storage
  • Crystallization
  • Processing

Measurement of the charge can provide valuable information that assists with formulation development to control these interactions to predict stability and improve shelf life.

The Zetasizer Nano ZSP has the sensitivity, and associated protocols and software to reliably and accurately measure protein mobility in order to study and understand protein formulation behavior.
